Indonesia

Outlook opened its first office in Surabaya in 1998 and opened the first furniture testing laboratory in Indonesia in 2008. The company’s sourcing reach includes the areas of Java and Bali and includes secondary offices in Cirebon and Semarang.

Through 20 years of growth, Indonesia is now known as one of the world’s leading furniture and decorative accessories manufacturers. Indonesia’s wood and rattan products are in high demand, particularly outdoor and indoor furniture made of the local teak, mahogany, mindi, and rattan.

Environmental sustainability in raw material sourcing and production methods are now the standard for Indonesian furniture manufacturers as consumers seek out environmentally friendly products.

Indonesia’s furniture sector is ideally poised for growth and expansion. Capitalizing on the country’s abundant raw material supply as well as its experienced labor enables Indonesia to focus on providing high quality furnishings, environmental sustainability, and functional design as well as competitiveness among emerging markets.

Outlook’s Indonesian Country Manager is Daud Musafar. Daud has been with Outlook since 2003 and in addition to managing operations throughout Indonesia, he uses his extensive technical expertise to also oversee the Surabaya testing laboratory.

Malaysia

The Malaysia furniture industry is amongst the top 10 largest exporters of furniture in the world, exporting around 80% of its production. Long-term exports to markets in the US, Japan, and Australia, has positioned Malaysia in a strong position in the global furniture industry. The recent growth in exports to UK, UAE, Saudi Arabia, the Philippines, and Russia has further solidified Malaysia’s position in the industry.

Popular exports include dining, bedroom, stools, and upholstery products. Most of Malaysia furniture is based on rubberwood material whether it is made of solid, panels or laminated board. Governmental sustainability programs will ensure the long-term supply of rubberwood material to meet future demands.

Outlook started providing sourcing in Malaysia in 1999 and opened an office in 2008, providing services to customers in the US, UK, and South Africa. Amran Wahab, with 30 years of furniture experience, is Outlook’s manager of Malaysian operations and is based in Muar, southern Malaysia, central to where much of Malaysia’s furniture is manufactured.

The Philippine office opened in March 1999 and has strong relationships with suppliers in the Visayas and Luzon regions. Outlook opened the first furniture testing laboratory in the Philippines in 2002.  Using local designers, and in-house expertise, Outlook offers furniture designs that highlight local materials and the workmanship of highly skilled personnel.

The Philippines has a long history of shipping high quality furnishings to the USA. One of our suppliers has been producing furniture since 1947.  Outlook has experience with a variety of indigenous raw materials including abaca, seagrass, lampakanay, raffia, tinalak, and others.  These materials can be woven, cross-stitched and sewn to create unique and specially crafted handmade products including furniture, decorative accessories, baskets, pillowcases, placemats, table runners, coasters and carpets.

Materials like rattan, wicker, coco, and seashells are turned into beautiful table lamps, pendants and chandeliers. The country also offers various types of fossilized stone and petrified wood for a range of furnishings and has some of the finest hand finished GRFC (Glass Fiber Reinforced Concrete) products available. The region is also known for providing finishes that require a high buffed/rubbed sheen as well as hand-carved, heavily distressed finishes using woods and veneers from around the world.

Louwee Sarausad uses her 20 plus years of furniture experience to manage the Philippine operation. She has been with Outlook since 2001 and brings with her extensive knowledge of the local vendor base.

Today Vietnam factories are equipped with state-of-the-art equipment and finishing lines, many with extremely large capacities to meet the growing demand, and with the infrastructure to support the growing industry. New upholstery and metal forming factories are currently being added making Vietnam a complete sourcing location.

In 2004, Outlook built a 15,000+ sq ft. office, showroom and the first dedicated furniture testing laboratory in Bing Duong Province. The testing lab provides both product and transit testing, ideal for supporting and delivering undamaged products to eCommerce consumers.

Outlook’s suppliers are located throughout the country and represent a variety of product categories. In addition to furniture, the Vietnam office sources decorative accessories, furniture components and construction materials such as kitchen cabinets, vanities, marble, granite, window blinds and plumbing fixtures.

Taiwan

Taiwan, originally one of the largest exporters of wood furniture in the 80s and early 90s, is now known for producing a wide variety of high-quality building materials and components. Top quality brass faucets, brass bathroom accessories, high quality metal frame mirrors and other occasional/accent furniture produced with metal and glass are currently produced.  Metal finishes using plating and powder coated processes are excellent.  Suppliers also produce motorized (smart) curtains/blinds, curtain rods, rod finials, and clocks.

Outlook also sources and manages the export of high-end acrylic and metal/wood composite furniture.  Outlook began sourcing and quality management services in Taiwan in 2001 and after a brief hiatus returned to Taiwan in 2008 where coverage includes all major manufacturing areas of the island.

Given the always changing manufacturing landscape in Asia, Taiwan is poised to continue a strong export market in higher-end quality products.

Outlook’s India office is based in New Delhi and has been providing sourcing and quality services since 2010.  Northeast of New Delhi is the city of Moradabad,  which is a hub for metal and glass products including lighting, decorative accessories, and furniture. Southwest of New Delhi in Jaipur and Jodhpur are factories which specialize in wooden furniture using mango and acacia wood, many of which specialize in their ability to provide products with a “reclaimed” look. India also produces some of the world’s finest handmade rugs.

One of India’s main strength lies in building mixed-media products,  combining wood with metal, wood with glass, metal, and glass.  India leads many other countries in their ability to use multiple materials in a single factory. India also specializes in handmade processes including metal cladding, carving, and sand casting as well as producing some of the highest end metal products in Asia. The ability to combine the use of machines and hand skilled labor makes India’s furniture unique and allows vendors to adapt to fast changing fashion trends.

Another strong advantage with India vendors is their willingness to accept lower order quantities compared to other countries that are supplying from larger factories.

Sonia Singh has been the Country Manager since the initial formation of the branch office in India. She has over 23 years in the furniture and household accessories industries, with extensive experience in furniture, textiles, and floor coverings.

Mexico

Outlook entered the Mexico market in 2022, offering sourcing and quality control services for our customers. Using Outlook’s well-established procedures and processes, Outlook’s customers will experience the same level of service in Mexico as Outlook is known for with their Asian operations. Outlook’s 25 years of experience throughout Asia has provided a solid foundation for onboarding the operations in  Mexico.

The initial sourcing categories in Mexico will include indoor/outdoor furniture, upholstery, decorative accessories & home decor, ceramics, hospitality furnishings, and materials for the home construction industry. The initial geographical focus will be in and around the cities of Mexico City, Guadalajara, Monterey and along the USA-Mexico border.

Originally planned for early 2020, the entry into Mexico was delayed due to the Covid pandemic. In order to expedite the entry  in 2022, Outlook entered into a strategic partnership with Four Corners Sourcing Inc. Founded twenty years ago by a serial entrepreneur and the former CEO of Walmart USA, Four Corners shares many of the same attributes with Outlook International; a service company dedicated to integrity and operational excellence in sourcing, product development, quality control and order management. Utilizing Four Corners’ headquarters in Austin, Texas provided Outlook an ideal location to launch our services in Mexico.
